Cooperation in a sensitive sector
Ukraine and the United Kingdom plan to deepen cooperation in nuclear and radiation safety, radioactive waste management and environmental recovery in the exclusion zone. The agenda was discussed during a working meeting at Ukraine’s State Agency for Exclusion Zone Management.
The British delegation was led by Lord Ian McNicol, president of the UK Nuclear Industry Association, and included representatives of Amentum and the British Embassy. The Ukrainian side involved the exclusion zone agency, Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant management, radioactive waste enterprises and the Ukrainian Nuclear Forum.
What was discussed
The parties focused on radioactive waste, decommissioning of nuclear facilities, infrastructure for safe management of radioactive materials, radiation protection and environmental recovery. This is a technically complex field where international practices, engineering capacity and long-term financing matter as much as political support.
British expertise could be used in projects inside the exclusion zone, including infrastructure modernization, production and scientific cooperation, specialist training and the introduction of modern technologies. The recently signed century partnership agreement between Ukraine and the UK creates an additional framework for such cooperation.
Why it matters
For Ukraine, nuclear safety is both an environmental and security priority. Better waste management and stronger monitoring infrastructure reduce long-term risks, support Chornobyl-related institutions and create opportunities for specialized engineering companies. The confirmed interest in joint projects shows that the exclusion zone is increasingly viewed not only as a legacy challenge, but also as a platform for modern safety technologies.
