Ukraine launches loans for business-owned power generation

Companies can finance gas plants, cogeneration, biomass, biogas and storage projects with state support

Ukraine has launched a new state support program for companies that want to build their own electricity generation capacity. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said businesses can apply for loans for gas-fired power plants, cogeneration units, biomass and biogas facilities, energy storage systems and other infrastructure.

The loans are offered at ten percent annual interest, with part of the rate compensated by the state. The financing range is from one to twenty five million euros in hryvnia equivalent, with a term of up to five years.

From backup to business model

The program is designed for a power system that still faces attack risks and regional shortages. Companies may receive a payment deferral of up to one year while their energy facility is being built and launched.

Priority will go to projects in regions with electricity deficits, especially near the front. Applications are currently accepted through fourteen partner banks, and the number of participating banks is expected to grow.

The new instrument complements other support programs. Businesses can still use zero-interest financing for generators and gas units, as well as larger energy loans under the Affordable Loans 5-7-9 program. The practical aim is to make companies less dependent on outages and to turn distributed generation into a real layer of national resilience.
