Ukraine Conducts First All-Robotic Attack, Says ISW

Ukrainian forces have carried out their first assault using only unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and FPV drones, according to a new report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW)

This operation underscores Ukraine’s continued efforts to leverage technological innovations in ground warfare.

First Robotic Ground Assault

The ISW cites information from a spokesperson of a Ukrainian brigade operating in the Kharkiv region, who stated on December 20 that Ukrainian troops executed a ground attack near Liptsy without involving infantry. Instead, they relied exclusively on unmanned ground systems and drones to neutralize Russian positions. The exact date of this operation was not disclosed.

During the attack, dozens of UGVs equipped with machine guns were deployed. Additionally, other robotic systems were used to lay and defuse mines in the area, the spokesperson said.

Technological Edge to Offset Manpower Limitations

Analysts at the ISW highlight that Ukrainian officials have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technologies and asymmetric strike methods. This approach aims to compensate for Ukraine’s limited human resources, as opposed to Russia’s reliance on large-scale troop mobilizations that often result in high casualties for minimal territorial gains.

The use of advanced unmanned platforms—both ground-based and aerial—demonstrates Ukraine’s strategy of adapting to evolving battlefield conditions. By employing FPV drones, Ukraine can deliver precision strikes with less risk to its personnel, while ground-based robotic vehicles allow for offensive operations without sending infantry into harm’s way.

Broader Context of Innovation

This development coincides with other reported Ukrainian efforts to increase combat effectiveness through technology. For instance, Ukrainian special forces have recently deployed FPV drones in the Zaporizhzhia region to destroy Russian military trucks, vehicles, and an ATV over the course of a week.

These initiatives reflect an overarching policy shift within the Ukrainian military, aiming to employ smaller, more agile units equipped with advanced robotic or unmanned systems to offset numerical disadvantages. Although details of the operation remain sparse, the success of the first all-robotic ground assault signals a milestone in modern warfare and points to Ukraine’s continued commitment to innovation.
