The Joint Allocation Office platform has held the first monthly auctions for allocating cross-border transmission capacity for electricity exports from Ukraine for July 2026.
The largest export capacity was allocated on the Ukraine-Hungary interconnection, at 167 megawatts. Participants also received 44 megawatts each on the Slovakia and Romania directions. In parallel, monthly import auctions to Ukraine were also held.
A step toward European market practice
The new format follows rules for long-term allocation of cross-border capacity approved by Ukraine’s energy regulator in July 2025. The mechanism covers borders with Slovakia, Hungary and Romania and is implemented together with Ukrenergo and system operators of the neighboring countries.
JAO is a centralized European platform used to allocate interconnection capacity through common auctions. Moving monthly products to this platform makes the Ukrainian electricity market more predictable for traders and better aligned with European procedures.
On the import side, the largest capacity was distributed on the Hungarian direction, at 431 megawatts. Slovakia and Romania each received 112 megawatts of capacity for participants.
For Ukraine, the auctions are not only a technical market change. They are part of deeper synchronization with the European energy system.
More transparent and standardized access to interconnectors can support electricity trade, improve planning for market participants and strengthen Ukraine’s role in regional energy flows.
