Ukraine sees record firewood demand as households prepare for winter

State forestry data show purchases have doubled from last year as communities build heating reserves

Ukrainians are buying firewood at an unusually active pace ahead of the heating season. Since the beginning of the year, consumers have purchased almost one point one million cubic meters of firewood from state forestry enterprises, roughly twice the volume recorded during the comparable period last year.

The jump reflects a very practical wartime calculation. Households, communities and public institutions want backup heating sources in case power or gas infrastructure is damaged again. Firewood is not a modern energy solution, but for many rural areas and small towns it remains a critical reserve.

Demand is moving earlier

Forestry data show an average monthly sale of about two hundred twenty five thousand cubic meters. Officials expect annual consumption to exceed three million cubic meters. Around two hundred thousand cubic meters have already been stocked, while more supply is planned for households before colder weather arrives.

The state forestry network says more than one thousand three hundred local units are monitoring available reserves. This is important because the problem is not only the total amount of wood, but also its location, delivery time and accessibility for people who need it before the season begins.

Prices are described as stable and lower than exchange levels. Hardwood from the first quality group remains the most expensive, while other categories give households cheaper options depending on heating systems and local availability.

Public sector demand is also visible. Contracts have been signed for social institutions, budget organizations and defense needs, with part of the contracted volume already shipped. The result is a heating market that looks more organized than panic-driven, but the high pace of purchases shows how seriously Ukrainians are preparing for winter risks.
