Ukraine weighs the real cost of H225M-class helicopters

Fleet renewal could support transport and rescue missions, but full squadron costs compete with air defense, drones and ammunition needs

Ukraine already operates European H225 helicopters in state services, but any expansion toward military H225M-class aircraft would require a careful cost-benefit assessment. Recent international contracts show that a single modern multipurpose helicopter can cost tens of millions of euros, while a full squadron with weapons, maintenance and mission systems can approach the scale of a major defense program.

The H225M is a Western counterpart to the Soviet Mi-8 and Mi-17 families that Ukraine has used for decades. It can transport personnel, carry cargo, support search-and-rescue missions and potentially perform specialized tasks depending on configuration. Those capabilities are useful, especially as older fleets age and maintenance becomes harder.

Procurement is more than the aircraft price

The purchase price is only one part of the calculation. A serious helicopter program includes training, spare parts, maintenance infrastructure, mission equipment, weapons integration, communications, simulators and long-term support. Contracts differ widely because each country buys a different package, not just the airframe.

European defense credit programs could reduce immediate budget pressure, but they do not remove the strategic choice. Ukraine also needs air defense, ammunition, drones, fighter aviation and other systems. Every large procurement must therefore be weighed against urgent battlefield and infrastructure protection needs.

The broader question is fleet architecture. Ukraine may compare H225M-class aircraft with alternatives from other manufacturers, including options that could offer localization, different operating costs or better fit for specific missions. The best decision will depend not only on headline cost, but on lifecycle value, support reliability and how quickly the helicopters can strengthen real capabilities.
