Hybrid car demand keeps rising in Ukraine

Registrations of HEV and PHEV passenger cars grew as drivers looked for lower fuel costs and practical crossovers

Ukraine’s hybrid car segment continues to expand, supported by rising fuel costs and stronger interest in vehicles that combine lower consumption with familiar driving range. In April 2026, more than 3.6 thousand passenger cars with HEV and PHEV technology were registered, roughly one third more than in the same month a year earlier.

The structure of demand is also changing. New cars still dominate the segment, but their share slipped to about 55 percent, meaning used imported hybrids remain an important part of the market. For many buyers, a used hybrid offers a compromise between fuel economy, purchase price and easier adaptation than a fully electric vehicle.

Crossovers lead the shift

The most popular new hybrid models were crossovers. Toyota RAV4 led the new-car ranking, followed by Toyota Yaris Cross and Nissan Qashqai. This confirms the broader Ukrainian preference for practical vehicles with higher clearance, family usability and predictable service networks.

Among imported used hybrids, Ford Escape, Kia Niro and Toyota Prius were the strongest performers. The mix shows that demand is not limited to one price category. Buyers are choosing both compact efficient models and larger crossovers, depending on budget and daily use.

For dealers and service businesses, the trend creates a growing aftermarket for hybrid batteries, diagnostics and maintenance. For the broader auto market, it signals a gradual transition rather than a sudden electric leap. Ukrainian drivers are moving toward cleaner and more economical mobility, but they still value resilience, service access and long-distance flexibility.
