Ukrainian Leopard tanks to receive C3105 turret upgrade

The Belgian combat module gives Leopard 1 a rare ability to fire from closed positions

Ukraine’s defense forces have successfully tested a modernized Leopard 1 tank fitted with the Belgian C3105 turret module. The upgrade was developed by John Cockerill, and an unnamed customer has signed a contract for another thirty such turrets.

The first five modules are expected to be delivered in June 2027. Defense analysts believe the deal may have been financed by the Belgian government as part of wider support for its own defense industry and Ukraine’s armored capabilities.

What changes for Leopard 1

The key advantage of the C3105 module is the gun elevation angle. The turret allows the barrel to rise to forty two degrees, while many Western tanks are limited to roughly half that figure. This gives the upgraded Leopard 1 the ability to fire from closed positions, a function rarely available on Western tank platforms.

For Ukraine, the modernization can extend the usefulness of Leopard 1 vehicles that are lighter and older than newer main battle tanks. With a new turret, improved fire-control options and indirect-fire potential, the platform may become more flexible for defensive positions and support missions.

The project also shows how European industry can adapt existing equipment instead of waiting only for new platforms. In a long war, such upgrades can matter as much as fresh deliveries because they turn available hulls into more capable battlefield assets.
