A Step Toward Smart Waste Management
On September 7, Ukraine inaugurated its second mobile digital “Sorting Capsule”, an innovative 24-hour self-service station where citizens can hand over more than 20 categories of recyclables, as well as non-recyclable plastics and textiles for safe disposal.
The station operates around the clock and provides personal access via smartphone, ensuring full automation and user convenience.
The initiative was launched with the participation of the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, represented by Deputy Minister Yegor Perelygin, along with partners Epicenter, Impact Force, and the NGO “Ukraine Without Waste.”
How the System Works
Each “Sorting Capsule” is built using repurposed sea containers, embodying the principle of a “second life” for materials. Inside, the capsule features:
-
clearly labeled bins for multiple types of waste;
-
digital instructions and visual materials for sorting;
-
24/7 self-service access through a mobile app.
The digital infrastructure is connected to the E-Waste platform, which tracks the entire cycle — from collection to recycling — providing real-time analytics on waste volumes, categories, and processing outcomes.
Environmental and Economic Impact
According to Deputy Minister Yegor Perelygin, the initiative is a model of public-private environmental transformation:
“Such projects demonstrate real environmental change, where the state, business, and civic initiatives work together. It’s not only about convenience but also about awareness — building a sorting culture that forms the foundation of Ukraine’s circular economy.”
The project aligns with Ukraine’s Green Transition goals, encouraging:
-
digitization of waste management processes,
-
data collection to attract green investments and support recycling infrastructure,
-
systemic integration of waste sorting into state environmental policy.
Scaling the Initiative
The “Sorting Capsule” project, developed by the NGO “Ukraine Without Waste”, is now entering its expansion phase. New capsules will be deployed across Ukrainian regions in cooperation with municipalities, developers, and retail networks.
The goal is to make modern waste sorting infrastructure accessible to every Ukrainian, ensuring that environmental responsibility becomes part of everyday life and business practice.
Strategic Context
The initiative supports Ukraine’s commitments under the European Green Deal and EU Waste Framework Directive, promoting circular economy models and private-sector participation in sustainable infrastructure.
For investors, such projects represent growing opportunities in smart urban technologies, waste management automation, and ESG-driven impact ventures — areas expected to expand rapidly under Ukraine’s post-war recovery framework.
