Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development Serhiy Derkach announced these intentions during a recent telethon.
Commitment to Maintaining Aviation Operations
Derkach emphasized the government's dedication to keeping the aviation sector operational despite ongoing challenges. He assured that commercial flights will resume swiftly when security conditions stabilize. Addressing concerns about whether discussions on restoring air traffic are speculative, Derkach clarified the proactive measures being taken.
Preserving Aviation Infrastructure and Workforce
"The issue of aviation is crucial for Ukraine. Currently, our priority is to preserve aviation infrastructure, including both airports and air navigation systems, to ensure readiness for reopening airspace when security allows," stated Derkach.
He highlighted the importance of retaining skilled aviation personnel, noting that those working in aviation are certified according to international standards. "These individuals have undergone extensive training and certification. If they were to leave the sector, it would be exceedingly difficult to recruit, train, and certify new personnel, potentially taking years. We cannot allow the aviation sector to deteriorate to this extent."
Government Efforts to Safeguard Aviation Readiness
Derkach reiterated the government's efforts to maintain the operational status of aviation systems. "We are committed to keeping aviation in working order so that when the security situation improves, we can reopen airspace quickly and resume commercial flights," he added.
Current Challenges and Future Prospects
Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development Timur Tkachenko reported in late November that all state bodies are evaluating the possibility of partially reopening Ukraine's airspace. However, due to the high level of ongoing threats, immediate reopening remains unlikely.
In late October, Ukraine presented a comprehensive roadmap for reopening airspace under martial law, detailing a step-by-step plan and the necessary requirements for a partial airspace opening.
International Interest in Reopening Ukrainian Airspace
At the Kyiv International Economic Forum (KIEF) on November 7, Crispin Ellison, a senior partner at insurance broker Marsh McLennan, indicated that 5-6 airlines have expressed interest in resuming flights in Ukrainian airspace starting January 2025. Boryspil Airport is considered a potential initial point of entry. However, Ellison noted that the resumption of flights is contingent upon the effective deployment of air defense systems.
Conclusion
Ukraine remains steadfast in its efforts to restore its aviation sector, ensuring that airspace can be safely reopened to support economic recovery and connectivity once the security environment improves. The government's focus on preserving infrastructure and retaining skilled aviation professionals underscores the importance of a resilient and ready aviation system for the nation's future.
