Naftogaz proposals under new agreement
Ukraine has presented its first projects to U.S. partners under the recently signed subsoil cooperation deal. According to Bloomberg, Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretsky confirmed that the company has developed ten projects focusing on resource production and energy efficiency.
Plans for implementation
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko clarified that at least three projects will be implemented by the end of 2026, financed through joint U.S.-Ukrainian investment funds. She made the statement after meeting with representatives of the American organization overseeing the financing mechanism.
Koretsky stressed Ukraine’s intention to be among the first countries to benefit from the new agreement, urging Western companies to join projects using existing licenses.
Renewed interest in shale gas
The Naftogaz head recalled that Shell and Chevron once launched shale gas projects in Ukraine but abandoned them in 2014, following the annexation of Crimea and the start of the war in Donbas.
One of the key untapped sites is the Oleske field in western Ukraine.
“We would be happy if Chevron or other companies with experience in shale gas development would pay attention to this project,” Koretsky said.
Strategic significance
-
Ukraine is seeking to boost domestic energy production and reduce dependence on imports.
-
Cooperation with the U.S. under the subsoil deal opens access to capital, technology, and expertise.
-
Reviving shale gas projects could transform Ukraine into a regional energy player, while also strengthening energy security against Russian aggression.
✅ Bottom line: With Naftogaz’s first projects now on the table, Ukraine is pushing for deeper U.S. involvement in subsoil development, hoping to revive stalled shale gas initiatives and attract large-scale investment in its resource sector.
