Ukraine has commissioned 33 underground schools as part of a nationwide program to restore safe, in-person education during wartime. According to Education Minister Oksen Lisovyi, more than 170 projects worth over ₴11 billion are underway, with a total of 210 underground facilities planned.

Infrastructure and design:
The facilities are not simple shelters but full-scale schools, featuring classrooms, dining areas, gyms, learning zones and social spaces. Standard designs were developed with the support of donors including UNICEF and the Howard Buffett Foundation, alongside custom projects from local communities.

These underground schools are being prioritised in frontline and border regions, enabling thousands of children to return to safe, offline education for the first time in years.
