Ukraine keeps global lead in sunflower oil exports

Fertile black soil, climate advantages and large sunflower acreage keep the country at the center of the global market

Ukraine remains the world leader in sunflower oil exports, a position built on natural advantages, large-scale farming and a processing industry closely linked to global food supply chains. Ukrainian sunflower oil accounts for a major share of international trade, making the sector one of the country’s most recognizable agricultural strengths.

The foundation of this leadership is the land itself. Ukraine holds a large share of the world’s black soil, one of the most fertile soil types for crop production. Combined with warm weather and many sunny days, especially in central and southern regions, these conditions make sunflower cultivation highly competitive.

From black soil to export terminals

Sunflowers are grown across more than six million hectares in Ukraine. This scale allows the country to cover domestic demand and continue supplying foreign markets, even as wartime logistics and port access remain strategic challenges for the broader agricultural sector.

Export leadership is not only about the harvest. It also depends on crushing capacity, storage, inland transport, port infrastructure and commercial relationships with buyers abroad. The value chain stretches from fields and elevators to processing plants and maritime logistics.

For global buyers, Ukrainian sunflower oil is important because it provides volume and continuity. For Ukraine, the sector supports farmers, processors, logistics companies and foreign currency earnings. It also shows how agricultural specialization can become a long-term export advantage when natural resources, infrastructure and market access work together.

The key question for the coming years is whether Ukraine can keep strengthening this position while rebuilding logistics and adapting to a more competitive food market. If transport routes remain open and processing investment continues, sunflower oil will stay one of the country’s flagship export products.
