Ukraine and Switzerland deepen food safety and veterinary cooperation

The talks focused on export access, animal health, plant protection and technical assistance

Ukraine and Switzerland are strengthening cooperation in food safety, veterinary standards and international agricultural trade. A Ukrainian delegation from the State Service on Food Safety and Consumer Protection held working meetings in Switzerland with officials responsible for food safety and veterinary affairs.

The discussions covered animal health, plant protection and quarantine, bilateral trade and technical assistance projects. The visit also included participation in a plenary meeting of heads of food safety agencies in Bern, giving Ukraine another channel for practical integration with European regulatory systems.

Standards and market access

For Ukrainian producers, cooperation in food safety is directly linked to export capacity. Stable access to international markets depends on certificates, veterinary controls, risk monitoring and mutual recognition of rules. Switzerland is part of the European Free Trade Association, while veterinary cooperation is based on alignment with European Union regulations.

As of early June, hundreds of Ukrainian enterprises had the right to export products to the European Union, including food producers and companies handling non-food products of animal origin. Work with Swiss partners can support this base through technical expertise, certification practice and projects in organic and dairy sectors.

The broader goal is to keep Ukrainian exports reliable during wartime and to preserve alternative routes for trade. In that sense, food safety cooperation is not a narrow technical issue. It is part of food security, agricultural competitiveness and Ukraine’s long-term integration into European systems.
