Ukraine to Modernize Drinking Water Quality Monitoring with Centralized System

The Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine has launched a centralized mechanism for monitoring drinking water quality, ensuring better data transparency and faster identification of pollution risks

The new approach is anchored in a single information platform moderated by the ministry.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the initiative, marking a significant step toward improving water resource management and public health in Ukraine.

Key Features of the Monitoring System

  1. Centralized Data Collection:

    • The state of water resources will be monitored centrally using an information and analytical platform.
    • Data on drinking water supply, wastewater treatment, and pollution risks will be consolidated in one place.
  2. Transparency and Accessibility:

    • The platform will increase data transparency, offering access to ministries, agencies, and public health organizations.
    • It will facilitate prompt action to address issues related to water quality, pollution, and ecosystem preservation.
  3. Comprehensive Monitoring Areas:
    The system will focus on:

    • Drinking water quality.
    • Condition of centralized drinking water supply facilities.
    • Efficiency of wastewater treatment systems.
    • Reuse of treated wastewater and sewage sludge.

Implementation Goals

  1. Improved Data Management:

    • Development of an information and analytical platform for collecting, processing, analyzing, and storing data.
    • Establishing a unified approach to data collection and analysis.
  2. Risk Identification and Management:

    • Early detection of pollution risks to ensure water safety.
    • Improved management of wastewater treatment and minimization of ecosystem damage.
  3. Emergency Preparedness:

    • Real-time updates on the state of water supply facilities and potential emergencies.
    • Enhanced response capabilities for water-related crises.

Benefits for Local and National Authorities

Deputy Minister Kostyantyn Kovalchuk emphasized that the new system will:

  • Ensure sanitary compliance of drinking water.
  • Enable authorities and local governments to make data-driven decisions.
  • Support efforts to minimize pollution and preserve ecosystems.

Why This Matters

The introduction of this system aligns with Ukraine’s broader goals of modernizing its infrastructure and meeting EU standards for environmental management. By addressing challenges in water resource management, Ukraine aims to safeguard public health and strengthen its environmental sustainability.
