The company announced the news on its official website.
Delivery and Cost
Rheinmetall has not disclosed the exact value of the deal but indicated it falls within a “double-digit million euro” amount. These 20 IFVs are scheduled for delivery during the first half of 2025.
Previous Deliveries and Maintenance
To date, Rheinmetall has already transferred more than 100 Marder IFVs to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This latest order will bring the total number of Marder 1A3 vehicles provided to Ukraine to approximately 140 since the first batch arrived on March 21, 2023.
The IFVs being delivered are previously used vehicles from the German Army inventory and undergo comprehensive refurbishment at Rheinmetall’s facilities in Unterlüß and Kassel before shipment. Additionally, Rheinmetall has established maintenance and repair services for these vehicles within Ukraine.
About the Marder 1A3
The Marder, developed in the 1960s, is armed with a 20 mm Rh 202 automatic cannon and a coaxial 7.62 mm MG3 machine gun. While it can be equipped with MILAN anti-tank guided missiles, there have been no observed cases of Ukrainian forces using ATGMs on these platforms. Each vehicle accommodates a crew of three and can transport up to seven additional infantry personnel.
This ongoing provision of IFVs is part of Germany’s broader support for Ukraine, enhancing the mobility, protection, and combat capabilities of the Ukrainian Defense Forces amid ongoing hostilities.
