Ukraine to Receive Rheinmetall’s Latest Skyranger Anti-Aircraft Systems

Mobile drone-defense systems will be delivered by the end of the year under a multimillion-euro contract signed at DSEI in London

Rheinmetall Confirms Supply Deal

German defense concern Rheinmetall will equip Ukraine with the latest Skyranger anti-aircraft systems, designed to protect against drones, helicopters, and cruise missiles.

CEO Armin Papperger confirmed in an interview with ZDF that the contract will be signed this week during the DSEI defense exhibition in London. Deliveries are scheduled to begin before the end of 2025.

The deal is valued at hundreds of millions of euros, though the exact number of systems and modifications remains undisclosed.

Capabilities of the Skyranger System

The Skyranger 35 is a mobile anti-aircraft artillery system featuring:

  • 35 mm Oerlikon Revolver Gun – high rate of fire and precision.

  • Modern sensors & radar – 360° detection and tracking.

  • Coverage: each system protects an area of 4 x 4 km, creating a “drone-free zone.”

  • Targets: drones, helicopters, cruise missiles, and low-flying threats.

  • Mobility: can be mounted on multiple platforms, including Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks, already in service with Ukraine.

  • Integration: connects to multi-layered air defense networks for coordinated operations.

“Each system can cover an area of four by four kilometers, providing a complete drone-free zone. This means that all UAVs will be destroyed,”Armin Papperger, Rheinmetall CEO.

Why Skyranger Matters for Ukraine

Ukraine is under intense Russian drone and missile attacks, which makes short-range, mobile air defense systems essential. Unlike stationary platforms, Skyranger’s high maneuverability allows it to quickly cover critical troop formations and infrastructure.

While the Bundeswehr also plans to acquire Skyranger systems, Rheinmetall has prioritized deliveries to Ukraine given the urgency of battlefield needs.

Background: Rheinmetall’s Expanding Role in Ukraine

  • Earlier, Rheinmetall announced the “Frankenstein” air defense tank, a hybrid platform based on the Leopard 1 equipped with the Skyranger module.

  • Rheinmetall already cooperates with Ukraine on tank repair, Leopard IFVs, and 155 mm ammunition production.

  • The company is a central player in Europe’s broader strategy to expand defense production and support Ukraine’s long-term security.

Outlook

The supply of Skyranger systems will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s short-range air defense and counter-drone capabilities. Combined with existing Western systems (Patriot, IRIS-T, NASAMS), Skyranger adds a mobile, layered shield that can adapt to Russia’s evolving drone and missile tactics.

With delivery expected by the end of 2025, Ukraine is set to receive some of the most modern air defense technology currently available in Europe.
