Ukraine resumes urea exports to the European fertilizer market

First shipments through Chornomorsk come as weak demand and global price pressure shape the fertilizer market

Ukraine has resumed urea exports to European countries after a long pause. The first large shipment went through the port of Chornomorsk to Italy, while smaller batches had recently been supplied to Romania and Hungary.

The return of exports indicates that Ukrainian fertilizer production and logistics are gradually reconnecting with European markets. At the Cherkasy Azot plant, two urea workshops continue operating: one supports production of urea-ammonium nitrate solution, while the other produces commercial urea.

Export recovery meets weak prices

The market backdrop remains difficult. Fertilizer prices are under pressure from weak demand and lower global quotations. Ukrainian urea prices continue to decline, while imported product in ports and warehouses also competes actively with domestic supply.

Regional traders are waiting for new price benchmarks. A large Indian tender for urea procurement could influence the Black Sea market and set the tone for further trading activity.

For Ukrainian producers, restored exports are a positive signal, but not a guarantee of easy margins. The sector needs stable logistics, predictable energy costs and enough farmer demand to keep production economically balanced.

The broader European context also matters. The EU has temporarily removed duties on key nitrogen fertilizers, expecting lower costs for farmers and reduced dependence on supplies from Russia and Belarus. That can create opportunities, but it also increases price competition.
