Ukraine — One of the World’s Leaders in Mineral Wealth
Ukraine’s subsoil contains over 20,000 deposits and occurrences of minerals, with 117 resource types officially recorded. Of these, 8,172 deposits have confirmed industrial significance, and 2,868 are currently being mined. This makes Ukraine one of the most resource-rich countries globally, with mineral reserves valued at $14.8 trillion.
The Leading Mineral — Coal
In terms of volume, coal is Ukraine’s most abundant mineral. The country holds over 54 billion tons of explored hard coal reserves, ranking 2nd in Europe and 7th in the world.
-
Hard Coal: Concentrated mainly in the Donetsk basin (Donbas), with deposits of thermal, anthracite, and coking coal. Smaller reserves are found in the Lviv-Volyn basin.
-
Brown Coal: Located in the Dnieper basin, with the Oleksandrii deposit as the largest open-pit mine.
Other Major Resources
-
Iron Ore: 27.4 billion tons, mainly in the Kryvyi Rih basin, providing over 90% of national output.
-
Manganese Ore: About 2.37 billion tons in the Nikopol manganese basin, placing Ukraine among world leaders.
-
Additional Minerals: Significant reserves of titanium, uranium, graphite, lithium, gallium, copper, and zinc.
Strategic Value
Ukraine’s mineral wealth underpins its industrial capacity, supports energy security, and has substantial export potential. However, full exploitation requires modern technology, investment, and stability in mining regions.
