The United States is going to assist Ukraine in providing guaranteed energy security and steadiness supplies, particularly for atomic energy. This was told by the United States charge d'affaires in Ukraine Christina Quinn at a meeting with Ukrainian energy minister Hermann Haluchenko. The sustainability of Ukraine’s heating season was discussed at the meeting.
Collaboration of parties was spoken about. It’s vital for providing eternal work of the nuclear energy station during the heating season 2021-2022, including technical support and stable replenishment of fuel stocks in the context of the increased load on the Energoatom.
Company Energoatom is the electricity provider of the national atomic energy plants of Ukraine. It provides almost 50% of the energy generation in Ukraine.
At the end of November 2021, the preventive maintenance of block 4 was completed. Then Energoatom fully loaded four of the six electricity generators of the Zaporizhzhia atomic plant by the nuclear rods of the American Westinghouse. They were designed for VVER-1000 reactors. It is already applied in six of the 15 power units of Ukrainian nuclear energy facilities, 13 equipped with such atomic reactors. The stations mentioned above have enough fuel for the next 2-2.5 years.
On August 31, 2021, in Washington, during the visit of president Volodymyr Zelenskyy Energoatom and Westinghouse signed a contract on collaboration. The document guarantees the participation of Westinghouse in the completion of the fourth power station of the Khmelnytska atomic energy plant and four more sections of other Ukrainian nuclear plants.
