Ukraine’s Wind Power Industry Is Growing: Nearly Twice as Many MW Connected in Half a Year as in All of 2024

In the first six months of 2025, 84 MW of new wind power capacity was added — strengthening Ukraine’s decentralized energy system despite the war

Wind energy shows record growth

In the first half of 2025, 84 MW of wind power plants were connected to Ukraine’s energy grid — almost double the 44.6 MW connected in all of 2024.

Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Viktor Mykyta emphasized that in wartime conditions, this pace of development is an important step toward energy security and stability.

Context: decentralization and protection of energy infrastructure

The update was shared during a meeting with regional leaders and the Minister of Energy Svitlana Grinchuk. The focus was on:

  • protecting critical energy infrastructure from Russian attacks,

  • implementing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s directive to develop a decentralized energy system in the regions,

  • expanding renewable energy sources to ensure stability of supply.

“Innovative projects will make it impossible for the enemy to destroy the new decentralized energy system. This means there will be light in homes despite constant attacks,” Mykyta stressed.

Solar energy and private households also contribute

Alongside wind power, over 130 MW of solar power capacity has been added thanks to installations in private households. Ukrainians continue to actively invest in autonomous solar systems, further strengthening resilience at the community level.

Why this matters

  • Decentralization reduces the vulnerability of the energy grid to large-scale attacks.

  • Renewable energy projects provide stable, sustainable electricity in wartime conditions.

  • International support and financing, such as Naftogaz attracting $2.5 billion for gas purchases, complement domestic renewable growth.

Bottom line: Ukraine’s wind and solar industries are rapidly expanding, making the energy system more resilient and aligned with European green transition standards. With 84 MW of wind capacity added in just six months, 2025 is already a breakthrough year for renewables.
