Ukrainian Airport in Talks with Low-Cost Airline Wizz Air to Resume Flights

BORYSPIL, UKRAINE – Management from Boryspil International Airport recently traveled to Budapest for discussions with Wizz Air about relaunching passenger flights to Ukraine

The talks, held at Wizz Air’s headquarters from February 11 to 13, 2025, focused on operational preparations for restarting services once Ukrainian airspace reopens.

1. Meeting Details and Outcomes

  • Negotiation Participants:
    - Boryspil International Airport management
    - Wizz Air executives
  • Location: Budapest, at Wizz Air’s corporate headquarters
  • Objective: Assess the feasibility of quickly restoring passenger services to and from Boryspil Airport after the airspace closure is lifted.

In a statement, Boryspil officials confirmed that Wizz Air has a “clear and ambitious plan to return to the Ukrainian market,” including the re-establishment of operational bases in Kyiv and Lviv.

2. Boryspil’s Readiness

During the talks, the Ukrainian airport team provided updates on:

  • Infrastructure and Airfield: Current state of runways, taxiways, and associated facilities
  • Terminal and Equipment: Condition of passenger terminals and ground-handling machinery
  • Certification and Security: Measures in place to maintain aviation standards, as well as staff qualifications and security protocols

These discussions aimed to ensure Wizz Air’s smooth and safe restart of flight operations once a ceasefire or an official end to hostilities allows the resumption of commercial aviation in Ukraine.

3. Wizz Air’s Plans for Ukraine

  • Resumption Timeline: Wizz Air has previously stated that flights to Ukraine could resume within six weeks of a ceasefire.
  • Expanded Market Presence: The airline intends to restore bases in Kyiv and Lviv, offering up to 5 million seats per year.
  • Strategic Importance: Re-establishing routes to Ukraine is seen as a key growth opportunity, reflecting Wizz Air’s commitment to returning once conditions permit.

By preparing infrastructure and ensuring full operational readiness, Boryspil International Airport is positioning itself to rapidly reconnect Ukraine with European travel networks. The mutual objective with Wizz Air is to provide passengers with a variety of cost-effective flight options as soon as it is safe to do so.
