Ukraine holds first long-term electricity auctions on the energy exchange

Energoatom and Ukrhydroenergo sold more than 92,000 MWh under a new mechanism for bilateral contracts

The Ukrainian Energy Exchange held the first auctions for electricity sales under bilateral contracts using the mechanism of long-term specialized auctions. The first initiators were Energoatom and Ukrhydroenergo.

The auctions offered standard products for August-September delivery. For non-household consumers, the mechanism creates an opportunity to fix electricity prices and volumes in advance for a longer period, reducing exposure to short-term market volatility.

First results

According to the exchange, companies sold the entire offered volume: 92,232 MWh of electricity. Forty-two companies were admitted to participate. Energoatom-Trading sold 80,520 MWh at a weighted average price of 5,012.53 hryvnias per MWh, while Ukrhydroenergo sold 11,712 MWh at 4,700 hryvnias per MWh.

For the market, this is a practical step toward more predictable contracting. Long-term products can help businesses plan energy costs, while generators receive a clearer sales instrument for future periods. The success of the first auctions will depend on whether the mechanism becomes regular and liquid enough for large consumers.
