The Foreign Policy Committee of Ukraine has approved draft law No. 0285, which pertains to the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The committee has recommended that the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, pass the law during its next plenary session.
People's Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced the committee's approval, noting that the vote on this ratification requires at least 226 votes from People's Deputies to pass. Since it concerns ratification, the process will involve a single vote.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi submitted the draft law to the Verkhovna Rada on August 15. The ratification is a significant step in fulfilling Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the European Union. It also holds importance in enabling Ukraine to prosecute Russian criminals for serious crimes, including genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression.
The approval and subsequent ratification of the Rome Statute will strengthen Ukraine's legal framework in pursuing justice for these crimes, particularly in the context of ongoing conflict and international law.
