Ukrainian Railways and Spain’s national rail operator RENFE have agreed on strategic cooperation that covers freight transport, intermodal logistics and the development of European-gauge railway projects in Ukraine.
The memorandum was signed between Ukrainian Railways and Renfe Proyectos Internacionales Sociedad Mercantil Estatal, a RENFE subsidiary. Spain has extensive experience operating networks with both 1668 mm and 1435 mm gauges, while Ukraine is developing 1435 mm lines alongside its traditional 1520 mm network.
Dual gauge and freight logistics
One of the main topics will be the development of dual-gauge networks, including technologies for automatic gauge change, organization of junction points between different systems and planning of European-gauge expansion. The agreement also covers freight flows and intermodal logistics between Ukraine and EU countries.
RENFE will share experience in high-speed railway operation, commercial models and work in a competitive European passenger market. Ukrainian Railways will contribute its wartime experience in maintaining transport continuity, restoring infrastructure and preserving network resilience under pressure. For investors, the cooperation strengthens the logic of Ukraine’s physical integration with European logistics corridors.
