Ukrainian Sea Corridor Handles 150 Million Tons of Cargo: Record Growth in Ship Traffic and Global Reach

The Ukrainian Sea Corridor has reached a total cargo turnover of 150 million tons, marking a new stage in the country’s maritime logistics recovery

According to Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction and Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksiy Kuleba, over 6,000 vessels have now passed through the corridor since its opening.

Just two months ago, the Ministry reported a total of 137 million tons of cargo handled and 5,300 vessels served — meaning that in this short period alone, approximately 700 ships carried 13 million tons of additional cargo.

Dynamic Growth in Cargo Turnover

The growth trajectory remains consistent but shows a decline in cargo per vessel.

  • First year: 64.4 million tons (2,380 vessels, ~27,100 tons per ship)

  • Second year: 72.6 million tons (2,900 vessels, ~24,900 tons per ship)

  • Recent two months: 13 million tons (700 vessels, ~18,600 tons per ship)

While the average load per ship has slightly decreased, total throughput and vessel frequency have grown steadily, demonstrating stronger overall logistics capacity and market demand.

Grain Exports Lead the Way

Out of the total 150 million tons of cargo, 90 million tons were grain — maintaining Ukraine’s position as one of the world’s key agricultural exporters.

  • After the first year, grain shipments reached 43.5 million tons.

  • After two years, the figure increased to 84 million tons.

  • In the first two months of the third year, grain exports grew by an additional 6 million tons.

Although the average monthly grain shipment remains slightly below last year’s pace, it has increased significantly since the May–July slowdown, confirming that Ukrainian ports are regaining momentum despite security challenges.

Expanding Global Reach

Kuleba also highlighted that Ukrainian products now reach 55 countries, compared to 54 countries after the second year and 46 countries after the first. This reflects growing logistical resilience and trade diversification, especially as more international shipping companies resume cooperation with Ukraine.

Infrastructure and Safety Measures

Ukraine continues to enhance port infrastructure and security:

  • 30 stationary shelters are now operational across seaports.

  • 21 additional mobile protective structures have been deployed in the ports of Greater Odesa.

  • Another 28 shelters are planned by the end of 2025, ensuring safer operations under wartime conditions.

Strategic Importance

The Ukrainian Sea Corridor has become a cornerstone of the country’s economic resilience and export independence, supporting global food security and restoring maritime trade routes disrupted by war.

With sustained government support, infrastructure investment, and international cooperation, Ukraine’s maritime logistics network is evolving into a reliable gateway connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia — even amid unprecedented challenges.
