CNN, citing Pentagon spokesperson brigadier general Patrick Ryder, reports that the United States has found solutions for the speedy transfer of 31 Abrams tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Instead of the latest version of the M1-A1, M1-A2 will be sent to Ukraine, which are almost identical in power. Thus, the tanks, which will undoubtedly bring Ukraine an advantage in the war, will arrive at the front in a shorter time than the previously expected M1-A1.
"After further study and analysis on how best to do this, DoD in close coordination with Ukraine has made the decision to provide the M1-A1 variant of the Abrams tank, which will enable us to submit significantly expedite delivery timelines and deliver this important capability to Ukraine by the fall of this year," Patrick Ryder said at a press conference.
In addition, Abrams will be equipped with "advanced armour and weapons systems," including a 50 calibre machine gun and a 120 mm cannon that are "very similar capability" to the equipment used on the M1-A2.
