On August 3, the upper house of the US Congress voted by a majority to admit Finland and Sweden to NATO: 95 in favour and 1 against.
"This historic vote is an important signal of the United States continued, unbiased commitment to NATO and our alliance's readiness to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow," Joseph Biden.
The accession documents of Finland and Sweden must be ratified by the government of each member country of the Alliance. After that, the two countries will be under the protection of Article 5 of the NATO Charter, which describes the principle of collective defence.
We remind you that traditionally neutral Sweden and Finland decided to join NATO because of the inadequacy of Russia and its war. After applying in May, the process slowed down a little due to Turkish resistance; according to Erdogan, the countries were hiding Kurdish extremists on their territory.
