Western Ukraine increases its role in domestic gas production

New wells and equipment investment are shifting attention to regions with stronger growth potential

Ukraine has seen a notable shift in the geography of natural gas production during the war. Western fields, once viewed as a secondary source compared with older eastern basins, are attracting more investment and showing stronger output dynamics.

Zakhidnadraservis has become one of the key examples of this trend. Company management says daily production has grown more than threefold compared with the prewar period, supported by new drilling, equipment upgrades and work on wells in the western region.

Energy independence through local output

The change matters for energy security. Domestic gas production reduces pressure on imports and supports regional resilience when infrastructure remains exposed to attacks. Western Ukraine also offers logistical advantages because some older fields in the Dnipro-Donets basin are mature and harder to expand quickly.

Investment in drilling technology is part of the same story. New equipment helps local companies replace services that international operators reduced after the start of the full-scale war. This strengthens domestic technical capacity and keeps the sector working under difficult conditions.

For investors, the sector still carries wartime risks, but the production growth shows that energy projects can move forward when local geology, equipment and operating discipline align. Gas will remain part of Ukraine energy balance while the country rebuilds power generation and expands renewables.
