National nuclear power generation company “Energoatom” and “Westinghouse Electric” signed a memorandum on the joint construction of a power unit at the Khmelnytsky NPP

The total cost of the project is $30 billion. The construction of the power unit will be a pilot project of the two companies.

The completion of the fourth power unit of the Khmelnytsky NPP will be carried out using the special technology AP1000, which is the only technology licensed by the US nuclear regulatory commission and in several countries in Europe and Asia.

"In the long term, the use of the American AP1000 technology a proven generation III + reactor with a capacity of about 1,100 MW will enable Energoatom to ensure a high level of safety, reliable operation of nuclear generation, its innovativeness and respect for the environment," said the head of Energoatom, Petro Kotyn.

Four AP1000 units already in operation in China are setting performance records, and two AP1000 units will soon be completed at the Vogtle nuclear power plant in the United States.

In the future, the corporations are planning to build four more power units using Westinghouse technology.
