A Law “On Waste” in Ukraine

Since January 1, 2018, the new law «On Waste» has entered into force. What has been realized today

The act prohibits the dumping of untreated garbage in landfills and requires the sorting and recycling waste. The country did not have the necessary tools and schemes for waste management at that time.

Today there are 22 sorting lines in Ukraine. Unique factories select materials that are suitable for recycling. In Ukraine today it is possible to sort out:

  • Glass;
  • Plastic;
  • Paper;
  • Tin cans and others.

Waste disposal costs €3 per ton. Also, a waste-sorting culture among the population is being introduced. Since October 1, 2018, under new building regulations, it has been permitted to design multi-stories without garbage chutes. The Act also introduced separate garbage sorting systems in hotels.

In 2021, the project to build the largest waste-processing plant in the country in the west of Ukraine passed a comprehensive State examination. Therefore in the city of Lviv, soon there will be a factory, which has received a positive opinion from the ministry of the ecology of Ukraine. The Lviv Waste processing plant will work on mechanical and biological processing technology. This processing will involve sorting waste with the help of special automated equipment. Glass, polyethylene, paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and other metals will be taken and recycled. About 15% of all the debris delivered to the plant can be processed in this way. Waste that is not suitable for recycling will produce RDF fuel.

The government has also announced plans to build two more landfills for recycling.
