World Bank to Allocate $415 Million to Support Education in Ukraine

The World Bank’s Board of Directors has approved a significant funding initiative to support Ukraine’s education system

The new project, titled "Learn," will provide $415 million in financing to improve the conditions for teaching and learning in the country, particularly in the challenging environment created by ongoing conflict.

Key Details:

  • Project Objective: The Learn project aims to enhance the safety and quality of the educational process for students, teachers, and school staff in Ukraine. The project will focus on creating safer learning and teaching environments under martial law conditions.

  • Funding Timeline: The agreements related to the project are expected to be signed in September 2024. By the end of the year, Ukraine is projected to receive $200 million from this fund, which will be allocated to the general fund of the state budget.

  • Broader Context: This initiative is part of a larger effort by the World Bank to support Ukraine amidst its ongoing challenges. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the World Bank has provided Ukraine with $34 billion in direct budget support. This includes the initiation of five new framework projects in 2022-2023, focusing on the restoration of energy, transport, and logistics infrastructure, as well as supporting the health care system and housing for displaced populations.

This substantial financial aid underscores the international community's commitment to ensuring the continuation and improvement of education in Ukraine, despite the difficult circumstances brought about by the conflict.
