Zelenskyy Meets European Parliament President Metsola: EU Accession Talks and School Support on Agenda

The leaders discussed Ukraine’s EU membership process, the 19th sanctions package against Russia, and EU support for school shelters and free meals

Fourth Visit of Roberta Metsola to Kyiv

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, marking her fourth visit to Ukraine during the full-scale war. The talks focused on strengthening cooperation with European institutions at a decisive stage of Ukraine’s EU integration.

EU Membership Negotiations and Sanctions

Key discussion points included:

  • Ukraine’s accession to the EU: Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of opening the first cluster of negotiations as soon as possible.

  • Sanctions policy: Both sides discussed the preparation of the 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia.

  • Russian assets: Special attention was paid to the mechanisms of using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

Social Support: Schools and Children

Beyond geopolitics, the meeting also addressed social initiatives:

  • EU support for the construction of shelters for schools to protect children in frontline regions.

  • Participation in the free meals program for Ukrainian schoolchildren, ensuring stability of education during wartime.

Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of these initiatives for Ukraine’s resilience and thanked Metsola for her consistent support.

Strengthening Institutional Cooperation

The President underlined the significance of opening the European Parliament Office in Kyiv, which will facilitate:

  • Closer coordination between Ukrainian MPs and MEPs.

  • A stronger EU presence on the ground in Ukraine.

Next Steps: UN General Assembly

The Ukrainian delegation, led by Zelenskyy, will travel to New York next week to participate in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, where EU–Ukraine cooperation and global support will remain in focus.
