$15 Million Dry Port Construction Underway in Vinnytsia

A significant infrastructure project is currently underway in the Vinnytsia community with the construction of a $15 million dry port, a railway terminal designed to enhance the operational transportation and handling of cargo

This initiative is set to play a crucial role in connecting the central regions of Ukraine with major ports and EU countries, facilitating more efficient trade routes and boosting regional economic growth.

Project Overview

The dry port, described as a "logistics hub with the appropriate infrastructure, only not at sea, but on land" by Deputy Mayor of Vinnytsia, Andriy Ocheretny, will serve as a pivotal link between the central regions of Ukraine, the ports of greater Odesa, and the EU countries through the Mostysk container terminal.

Key Features of the Dry Port:

  • Railway Terminal: The dry port will feature a comprehensive railway infrastructure to streamline the movement of goods across regions.
  • Container Capacity: At the first stage, the terminal will have a container yard with a capacity of approximately 30,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) per year. Additionally, a container warehouse with a 2,000 TEU capacity will be constructed during this phase.
  • Infrastructure Development: The project involves constructing railway tracks, a weighing system, and a 3,500 m² warehouse.

Investment and Construction Phases

The construction of the Vinnytsia dry port is divided into two stages, with more than $15 million in private investments dedicated to its development. Work began in the spring of 2024, and significant progress has already been made:

  • Railway Tracks: A portion of the railway tracks essential for the terminal's operation has been completed.
  • Weighing System: An advanced weighing system is in place to ensure accurate cargo handling.
  • Warehouse Construction: A 3,500 m² warehouse has been built to support the logistics operations of the port.

Use of Domestic Materials

The construction project emphasizes the use of domestic materials, supporting local industries and contributing to the regional economy:

  • Crushed Stone and Concrete: Sourced from Vinnytsia.
  • Sleepers: Supplied by Gnivan.
  • Rails: Produced in Dnipro.
  • Weighing Equipment: Provided by a company relocated from Kharkiv.

Strategic Importance

The dry port's strategic location in Vinnytsia makes it a critical logistical asset for Ukraine. It enhances connectivity and provides a viable alternative to traditional seaports, particularly during times when access to maritime routes may be restricted or less efficient.

Expected Benefits:

  • Economic Growth: The port is expected to stimulate local economic development by facilitating trade and attracting further investments.
  • Job Creation: Approximately 100 jobs will be created, with 50 positions anticipated to be filled by the end of this year.
  • Trade Efficiency: By linking central Ukraine with international trade routes, the port will significantly improve the efficiency of cargo transportation.

Timeline and Future Prospects

The Vinnytsia dry port is on track to be commissioned in the third quarter of this year. Once operational, it will enhance Ukraine's logistical capabilities and provide a boost to the nation's economy.

This project represents a critical step in modernizing Ukraine's infrastructure and aligning with global trade practices, positioning Vinnytsia as a key player in regional logistics and trade. With its completion, the dry port is set to become a cornerstone of Ukraine's efforts to integrate more deeply into the global economy and improve its logistics network.
