200 MW Battery Storage Connected to the Grid
DTEK Group, in partnership with American company Fluence, has officially connected Ukraine’s largest battery-based energy storage system to the grid. With a total capacity of 200 MW and the ability to store 400 MWh of electricity, the project is a milestone in Ukraine’s energy resilience.
The system can supply 600,000 households with electricity for two hours, significantly strengthening the country’s ability to withstand outages and grid instability.
Location and Timeline
The project consists of six new systems with capacities ranging from 20 to 50 MW, strategically located in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
-
Construction timeline: March – August 2025 (just six months).
-
Investment: €125 million.
-
Purpose: To ensure grid stability ahead of the critical winter season.
Strategic Importance for Ukraine
According to DTEK, the launch of the storage systems will:
-
Enhance grid stability and reduce the risks of accidents or outages.
-
Compensate for shunting generation shutdowns.
-
Contribute to the growth of renewable energy and the decentralization of Ukraine’s power sector.
The Minister of Energy highlighted that the project aligns with Ukraine’s National Action Plan for Renewable Energy, which prioritizes large-scale storage as a backbone of the green transition.
