On July 4, Spain took the presidency of the European Commission for the next half a year. The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, noted that the mandate of Spain will not be straightforward since this period of history is very difficult in itself. The president named 3 priorities towards the implementation of which the EU2023ES and the European Commission as a whole must redouble their efforts:
- Supporting Ukraine;
- Strengthening our competitiveness;
- Reaching out to global partners.
"After 500 days of resistance from the brave Ukrainians, our duty is to match their endurance and perseverance," Ursula von der Leyen.
The president that the Russian war kind of awakened the European Union and updated the list of challenges facing the European community. Therefore, now the EU is obliged to reduce dependence on Russia, strengthen the relationship with allies and develop competitiveness.
