Missiles for FrankenSAM Systems

Analysts have noted that the aid package includes new elements not previously transferred to Ukraine. The inclusion of RIM-7 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles and AIM-9L/I-1 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles represents a significant enhancement of Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

While Germany is supplying the Sea Sparrow missiles to Ukraine for the first time, these missiles have been in use by the Ukrainian military through prior deliveries from Belgium. In September 2023, Belgium acquired these missiles from Germany, where they were previously deployed on Bremen-class frigates.

Due to a shortage of original missiles for the Buk-M1 air defense systems, Ukraine initiated the FrankenSAM program to modernize its air defenses. Developed jointly by Ukrainian and American engineers and first implemented in November 2023 in the United States, this project allows modified Buk-M1 systems to fire Sea Sparrow missiles. These missiles can engage targets at distances up to 20 kilometers and altitudes up to 15 kilometers.

AIM-9L/I-1 Sidewinder Missiles

The German-supplied AIM-9L/I-1 Sidewinder missiles can be utilized in two significant ways:

  • F-16 Fighter Jets: Ukraine, having recently acquired F-16s, can equip these aircraft with the Sidewinder missiles to enhance their air-to-air combat capabilities.
  • FrankenSAM Systems: There is potential to integrate these missiles into a smaller, modified version of the FrankenSAM system, capable of launching AIM-9M air-to-air missiles. This improvised anti-aircraft system is designed to intercept cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), leveraging components provided by Ukraine's international partners.

Strategic Implications

The addition of these advanced missile systems is expected to significantly bolster Ukraine's air defense network. Enhanced capabilities to intercept a variety of aerial threats—including aircraft, cruise missiles, and drones—will improve Ukraine's defensive posture amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

This support from Germany reflects continued international efforts to strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities and underscores the importance of collaborative defense initiatives.
