On February 20, Kristalina Georgieva arrived in Kyiv. A meeting was held with president Zelenskyy and representatives of the government apparatus of Ukraine. Georgieva said that Ukraine is under international scrutiny, and she has no doubt that the IMF should continue to invest and help restore/develop businesses of all sizes and forms of ownership in Ukraine.
"I was very struck by the fact that the country and the government are functioning very well in these emergency conditions of the invasion. I wanted to see it. When I speak to the IMF board of directors tomorrow, I will say that this is indeed a country that is performing very well and effectively, despite to a terrible attack on her people, on her territory," Kristalina Georgieva.
On the morning of the same day, Georgieva was in Irpin and was pleasantly surprised by the speed with which Ukraine managed to restore the town, almost completely wiped off the face of the earth by Russian invaders.
As Ukrainian prime minister Denys Shmyhal informed, in the near future Ukraine expects to launch a program from the IMF for more than $15 billion. The funds will be directed in the form of immediate financial support and separately — to reform Ukrainian reforms to create a basis for new development.
In 2023, Ukraine needs to cover a $38 billion budget deficit. And $19.3 billion is already stolen thanks to donors from the EU and the US.
