As part of the Connecting Europe Facility, the European Union is modernising the railway track, customs and checkpoints between Ukraine and the current EU countries — Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary.
On the part of Ukraine, Ukrzaliznytsia will be responsible for connecting the railway infrastructure of Ukraine with the EU. According to the head of the company Uevheny Lyashchenko, work on modernising facilities has already begun in partnership with international organisations.
What will be created in the first place: a checkpoint and an intermodal terminal between Chop (Ukraine) and Cherna nad Tisou (Slovakia). The reconstruction of 1.435 km of the railway between Ukraine (Deep-Bukovina) and Romania (Vadul-Siret) is also being launched.
At this stage of cooperation between Ukraine and CEF, it was the European Union that chose the objects for reconstruction. In September of this year, the second stage will take place, and this time, Ukraine will determine and submit proposals. In the interests — the development of TEN-T for cargo and passenger connections.
