Kyiv and Copenhagen to Become Twin Cities

On the basis of Kyiv's proposal, Copenhagen is preparing a cooperation agreement for 3 years

The capitals of Ukraine and Denmark are preparing to become sister cities. Since the beginning of the war, the friendly state has accepted thousands of refugees from Ukraine and continues to support them in all available ways. The conclusion of an agreement on twinning will create a basis for future assistance from Copenhagen to Kyiv in the areas of tourism, reconstruction and improvement of the city. After the conclusion of the agreement, the municipality of Copenhagen will be able to send specialists from the field of urban planning and architecture to the capital of Ukraine.

"Copenhagen supports Ukrainians and Kyiv. During the year, we received several thousand Ukrainians and do our best to help them in difficult times. But I hope we can do even more for their warring homeland by contributing to the reconstruction of Kyiv. In this way, we can help from one capital to another, and we can connect our people even better," Sophie Hestorp Andersen, lord mayor of Copenhagen.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has approached Copenhagen with a proposal for twinning. Due to the war, the standard agreement of cities is not relevant, therefore, twinning will be established based on an exclusive agreement proposed by Kyiv.

"Over the past year, some very special human relations have arisen between Copenhageners and Ukrainians. Many Copenhageners began to help Ukraine, and therefore it is obvious that we are forming even closer ties with the capital of the country. I have travelled to Ukraine 3 times in the last year, and it is absolutely clear to me that all forms of support are needed for the Ukrainian struggle for freedom. I see cooperation with Kyiv as something of great opportunity for both Copenhagen and Ukraine, both culturally, humanly and economically," Jens-Christian Lütken, Copenhagen mayor for employment and integration.

We remind you that the sister cities are Irpin and Miami, Odesa and Yokohama, and Mississippi recognized the whole Ukrainian region as a sister city — Khmelnytskyy.
