Latvia Expells Around 6.000 Russians From the Country

The obligation extends to Russians who didn't receive Latvian citizenship and didn't make attempts to obtain it

The head of the Seimas commission for citizenship, migration and social cohesion, Ingmar Lidaka, said the documents are already being prepared. They will not be introductory but a requirement. If representatives of the Russian Federation in Latvia violate the requirement, they face administrative liability.

The letters will be sent to the Russians, who, having entered the country, did not pass the state language proficiency exam, did not receive a residence permit, did not register, etc. Note that the government of Latvia, after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, decided to introduce an exam for Russians living in the country. The compulsory examination is only conducted to test knowledge of the Latvian language. However, according to official data, this and other established (permission to stay in Latvia) requirements were ignored by 5-6.000 people with the passport of Russian citizens.

Therefore, the Baltic country will ask such Russians to leave or obtain a visa or temporary residence permit. Latvia will let the Russians decide within 3 months. However, as practice shows, representatives of Russia often do not follow the laws of other countries.
