Latvia Lobbying for Ukraine to Join NATO

Vilnius adopted a resolution calling on NATO countries to invite Ukraine to NATO in July 2023

On April 6, the Lithuanian Seimas adopted a resolution in which the praesidium, ministries and other government organisations consolidate their intentions to work on the unification of NATO member states for the official invitation of Ukraine to the Alliance. On July 11-12, Vilnius will host a NATO summit, before which Lithuania plans to work on the consent of the remaining 30 states to invite Ukraine to membership.

Zygimantas Pavilionis, head of the Seimas parliamentary committee on Lithuania's foreign affairs, said that in the optimal scenario, Ukraine could become part of NATO after signing a number of protocols and passing ratification.

"This would be a strategic decision by NATO to achieve peace in Ukraine and Europe," excerpt from the resolution.

"I think this resolution will be the most ambitious NATO parliamentary resolution you will see before the NATO summit. Show me at least one parliament that (...) will say that Ukraine should be invited to NATO in 3 months," Zygimantas Pavilionis.

"Brothers and sisters, we will have to work very hard to make this not only the statement of our parliament but also the statement of Poles, Swedes and all our other friends, especially in the big capitals," Zygimantas Pavilionis.

In addition to the Ukrainian issue, the revolution reinforces Lithuania's position regarding the strengthening of defence and the deployment of military brigades to protect the Baltic region of the eastern part of NATO. In addition to heavy artillery, air defence systems were deployed on the territory of Lithuania, "ensuring a smooth transition from airspace protection to air defence."
