On April 21, the president of the Ukrainian power company Energoatom Petro Kotin and the president of the American company Holtec International Chris Singh, remotely (in Kyiv and Camden, New Jersey, USA) signed a cooperation document. According to the agreement, representatives of power capacities of the 2 countries became partners, and within the framework of the document, the project of construction of small modular reactors in Ukraine was launched.
Implementing such a project will strengthen the energy security of Ukrainians and the energy independence of the world. According to Energoatom, the entire reactors will be realized until March 2029. For 6 years, the companies, in collaboration, will launch the first pilot reactor and program test it, build up on the territory of Ukraine to 20 reactors SMR-160, and connect to the grid at a minimum regulated capacity. The appearance in Ukraine of light water reactors SMR-160 simplifies the processes of electricity and heat production.
Recall that autumn-winter 2022 brought unexpected challenges to Ukraine and the world. Russia inflicted 15 massive blows on Ukrainians' energy systems, limiting light consumption in the country and halting electricity exports to other countries. In April 2023, the Ukrainian government resumed export.
