Lviv authorities proposed buying land near the airport in Sokilnyky to create an economic zone with production, logistics and commercial facilities. The city says the concept could generate up to 10,000 jobs and support regional growth.
Land owners plan a large residential district on the territory adjacent to the airport. The city considers this risky for future airport expansion and wants to offer an alternative site to the owners while reserving the current area for business activity tied to transport infrastructure.
The concept for the area was prepared by British engineering and architectural firms Jacobs, Gleeds and BDP. The plan emphasizes functions that work in synergy with the airport and the European gauge rail line planned for Lviv.
City officials argue that residential development would create long term noise and health risks and permanently block the area from aviation related and logistics uses. They say an economic zone would enable shorter supply chains and attract investment.
The updated concept is expected to be presented to national authorities and the investor, and later showcased at an international forum in London with support from the UK Ministry for Business and Trade and participation of the EBRD and British investment funds.
