Special Status For Poles in Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy granted Polish citizens in Ukraine a special status

On May 22, a representative of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) to the constitutional court Olha Sovhyria said that the Ukrainian government will consider a new bill. It will deal with the legal status of Polish citizens in Ukraine. This became known after the visit of the Polish president to Ukraine and his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The president of Ukraine will submit the bill. The parliament should consider the document and adopt a decision. If the vote is positive, Poles will have practically the same rights and freedoms in Ukraine as Ukrainian citizens.

According to Zelenskyy, this project will serve as gratitude in response to the law recently adopted by Warsaw. The Polish Sejm signed a document on assistance to citizens of Ukraine. It is noted that this is an unprecedented decision. Now Ukrainians in Poland have almost the same rights and opportunities as Poles.

"This is a big step and a gesture of a great soul. Only close friends can do that. And this step will not remain unilateral. Shortly, I will submit to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine a similar, mirror, project. God forbid Polish citizens will need all these advantages in such conditions, in war conditions. But these laws have great symbolic significance, showing that Ukrainians and Poles are native and equal. And I am sure that the deputy corps of Ukraine will support this law — quickly and clearly by a majority of votes," said the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

At this point, Ukraine did not stop thanking the Polish state for its military, humanitarian, and refugee assistance. The President of Ukraine awarded the city of Rzeszow, Poland, the honorary title of City-Rescuer. This city not only received refugees from Ukraine but also became a great hub for military assistance.
