The EU Council of ministers for internal affairs decided to extend the Directive on granting the right to reside in the territory of the EU countries and basic social protection from March 4, 2024, to March 4, 2025. This was announced by the minister of the interior of the EU (Spain) presidency, Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gomez. In addition, the right of temporary residence and protection is still valid for Ukrainian refugees for another 1.5 years.
Further, the Directive of temporary protection of Ukrainians in the EU countries must undergo another procedure – written translation of the text of the decree into all languages of the European Union member states.
"The EU will support the Ukrainian people for as long as necessary," Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gomez.
The Spanish politician added that the decision gives certainty to more than 4 million people who fled from Russian military aggression, performing against Ukraine.
