On June 29, before the NATO Summit in Madrid, a tripartite memorandum was signed between Turkey, Sweden, and Finland, confirming the decision of all blocs and the parties' consent
"Today in Madrid, before the start of the NATO summit, we held a substantive meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish prime minister Magdalena Andersson, with the support of NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg. As a result of this meeting, our foreign ministers signed a Memorandum of understanding between our countries confirming Turkey's support for the invitation of Finland and Sweden to join NATO at the Madrid Summit this week. The concrete steps for our accession to NATO will be agreed between the NATO Allies within the next two days, but now this decision is inevitable", Sauli Niinistö, president of Finland.
We remind you that Finland and Sweden applied for membership in May. After Turkey started blocking Sweden's entry, Sauli Niinistö said that without Sweden, his state would not join NATO.
"I am pleased that this milestone on Finland's path to NATO membership has been completed. I now look forward to fruitful discussions about Finland's role in NATO with our future allies here in Madrid," Sauli Niinistö.
"We now have an agreement that paves the way for Finland and Sweden to join NATO. I thank presidents Recep Erdogan, Sauli Niinistö and Magdalena Andersson for the constructive spirit that made this historic decision possible," Jens Stoltenberg.
