Ukraine records its first AI-agent payment transaction

PrivatBank and Mastercard tested a payment model where artificial intelligence can act for a customer

PrivatBank and Mastercard completed the first AI-agent payment transaction in Ukraine using Mastercard Agent Pay. The model allows an artificial intelligence assistant to perform a purchase within a clearly defined customer request.

The system makes AI agents visible participants in commerce. They are identified, authenticated and limited by consent, rather than acting as hidden browser tools.

Security becomes the central question

Security is built around the Know Your Agent concept, tokenized payment credentials and verification of the customer intent.

For banks and merchants, the pilot points to a future where AI assistants can manage subscriptions, compare offers and buy goods inside approved limits.

The goal is to allow automation to help with purchases without opening uncontrolled access to money or data.

The first transaction is a pilot signal, but it shows that payments will have to recognize software agents as well as people and merchants.
