Ukraine and Canada Signed a Nuclear Security Treaty

Installation of modern nuclear reactors, decommissioning of uranium facilities and protection of Ukrainian

Chief state inspector for nuclear and radiation safety of Ukraine Oleh Korikov and president of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Rumina Velshi identified the main directions of development. According to the document, Ukraine and Canada will jointly assess the safety of nuclear facilities. We are talking about pre-license testing of new small modular reactors. In addition, representatives of the Ukrainian and Canadian administrations will develop ways to safely decommission uranium facilities where nuclear elements are extracted and processed. Another point of cooperation under the agreement is restoring safe operation at temporarily occupied Ukrainian stations. Partners develop a plan for examining and stabilising nuclear and radiation-hazardous facilities, including Zaporizhzhia NPP.

Ukraine is eager to come to the safe use of radiation elements and associated stations. Therefore, in addition to ensuring safe operation, Kyiv seeks to establish activities to deal with and reduce radiation waste.
