Strengthening cross-border railway links
On September 23, 2025, during the TRAKO exhibition in Gdańsk, Polish Railways (PLK) and Ukrzaliznytsia signed a framework agreement designed to guarantee safe and uninterrupted train traffic across the Polish-Ukrainian border.
According to the PLK press service, the deal regulates:
-
organization of train operations,
-
infrastructure maintenance and usage,
-
technical standards and safety parameters on both sides.
Local border agreements and future projects
The framework document introduces procedures for concluding Local Railway Border Agreements (LRAA) for specific sections. These will define:
-
traffic schedules and rules of equipment operation,
-
personnel requirements,
-
placement of infrastructure elements of one state on the territory of the other.
The signing also lays the foundation for future initiatives, including international economic projects and cross-border investment programs.
Strategic importance of the agreement
PLK President Piotr Wyborski emphasized that cooperation with Ukraine is strategic:
“It enhances security, efficiency and supports the economic development of the region.”
The document was signed by Piotr Wyborski and Oleksandr Pertsovsky, Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia. It was also noted as the first international PLK contract signed at the TRAKO exhibition.
Additional train services in Ukraine
Meanwhile, Ukrzaliznytsia continues expanding its passenger services. On September 27–28, additional regional trains will run between Lviv and Vorokhta, as well as from Ivano-Frankivsk, helping passengers reach the Carpathian mountains.
Throughout September, extra routes are being introduced to handle growing passenger traffic and ensure more comfortable travel.
✅ Bottom line: The new Polish-Ukrainian railway agreement goes beyond technical cooperation — it paves the way for economic integration, cross-border investments, and more reliable passenger and freight flows between the two countries.
